Ant Hampton - C'est Ici Que Tout Se Passe (Everything Happens Here)

Ecrivain, metteur en scène et fondateur du groupe Rotozaza, Ant Hampton a créé pour The Window 41 des « Interventions Imaginaires » : scénarii performatifs, spectacles pour paysages urbains et ruraux en France et en Italie. Les différents scénarii écrits par Ant Hampton sont ensuite lus deux fois aux personnes qui vont être filmées : un habitant, ou quelqu' un travaillant dans l'espace en question. Après une pause de 30 secondes Ant Hampton commence à filmer. Le sujet devra répéter de mémoire « ce qui se passe ».

Les séquences accordent au spectateur des interprétations multiples des différents scénarii : les versions glissent entre les temps passé, présent et conditionnel. Les personnes filmées s’engagent devant la caméra avec un enthousiasme variant, se souvenant de certains détails, ou pas. Ils construisent un réseau de relations, en renégociation permanente, entre le public, l'oeil de la caméra, les voix, l'artiste, le sujet, la mémoire, le langage, le temps, le paysage et un scénario imaginé.

Ce projet rassemble les trois problématiques principales liées au travail d'Ant Hampton:

-La notion d’instruction donnée aux performeurs (souvent non-professionnels) qui improvisent sur des scénarii très précis élaborés par Ant Hampton. Ce travail de recherche a donné naissance au collectif Rotozaza qui a dix ans d'activités.
-Un work-in-progress, « The Other People » traitant l'idée du « Portrait Vivant » : rencontres intimes et encadrées au temps présent avec ce qu'on appelle dans le théâtre « les gens réels ».
- La possibilité des « performances sur papier » : « site-spécifique » qui n’existera que dans l’imaginaire.

Everything Happens Here
Performance maker Ant Hampton creates 'fantasy interventions': imagined, performative scenarios / shows / spectacles for filmed and photographed landscapes. For this exhibition he began by writing a number of such scenarios for various urban and rural landscapes. For each site, he invited a local inhabitant to sit, listen to him reading the text written for it, and to memorize as best they could the details of the imagined 'event'. Then he would start filming. After a prescribed 30 second pause the subject would attempt to recount the event, to camera, often beginning in the present tense.

The films, shot on-location in UK, France and Italy over the past month, allow the viewer different interpretations regarding the subject's relationship to the performance they describe, slipping as they do between present, past and conditional tenses, engaging the camera with varying degrees of enthusiasm, remembering certain details, omitting or forgetting others. They set up a web of relationships, in constant re-negotiation, between audience, camera, artist, subject (or 'sitter'), memory, time, landscape, text and an imagined scenario.

The project combines Hampton's three ongoing concerns - 1. the use of instructions to unrehearsed and often non-professional performers, as exemplified by his ten years of work in / as Rotozaza, 2. an ongoing project as The Other People, looking into the idea of 'live portraits' - framed, performative encounters with what's known in theatre circles as 'real people', and 3. the possibilities of 'paperwork performance' - site-specific theatre to exist only in the mind, as explored with the artist Britt Hatzius in their online photography / collective writing project, 'This Site Could Be Yours'.
